Why your video won’t upload to LinkedIn (and how to fix it without installing anything)

A video can sit comfortably inside every number LinkedIn publishes — under the size cap, under the length cap, a file type on its own supported list — and still get stuck at 0%, or post with no thumbnail, or simply never finish processing. That's not a fluke and it isn't LinkedIn being arbitrary. It's usually one specific mismatch: the file's container extension is fine, but the codec packed inside it isn't something the upload pipeline can actually decode. Here's LinkedIn's real upload spec, straight from its own Help Center, the codec trap that catches so much iPhone and Mac footage specifically, and how to fix it locally before you upload anything.

LinkedIn's own "Share videos on LinkedIn" help page lists exact numbers for a native video post: a maximum file size of 5GB and a minimum of 75KB; a maximum duration of 15 minutes, with a minimum of 3 seconds when uploading from desktop (2 seconds from the mobile app); a resolution range of 256×144 up to 4096×2304; an aspect ratio between 1:2.4 and 2.4:1; a frame rate between 10 and 60fps; and a bitrate between 192Kbps and 30Mbps. A separate "Video sharing troubleshooting" page lists the supported file types by name — MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM, MKV, WMV, plus a handful of older broadcast formats (VC1, MPEG, MPEG2, MPEG1VIDEO, DVVIDEO, QTRLE, TSCC2). If your export is inside all of those numbers and one of those extensions, LinkedIn's own published spec says it should go through.

Why an upload can still fail inside every one of those numbers

LinkedIn's own troubleshooting page documents the exact trap that catches people next, for one specific format: "if your file type is ProRes, you may be able to upload it, but it will not be able to process." Read that carefully — ProRes files aren't rejected at the door for being the wrong extension; they get accepted, sit there, and then simply never finish. The container looks fine. The codec inside it is the actual problem.

The same class of problem shows up constantly with a codec LinkedIn's page doesn't name but that affects far more everyday uploads: HEVC (H.265), the format an iPhone or Mac has recorded video in by default since iOS 11 in 2017, cutting file size by roughly half at similar quality according to 9to5Mac's coverage of Apple's original announcement — a default Apple's own support page confirms is still there today, under Settings → Camera → Formats. Buffer's own help center, which explicitly lists LinkedIn among the platforms it prepares video uploads for, names HEVC directly as "the most common cause" when "a video stays at 0%, hangs during upload, or shows an error such as 'Thumbnail generation failed.'" Its fix is exactly the ProRes fix, generalized: "re-encode the video to H.264 (MP4, H.264 video, AAC audio)." A file with a perfectly acceptable .mov extension, well under 5GB, well under 15 minutes, can still stall for a reason none of LinkedIn's published numbers describe.

The failure LinkedIn's own help page confirms for ProRes shows up just as often for HEVC — a codec problem hiding inside a container extension LinkedIn already accepts. Re-encoding fixes it either way; doing it in the browser skips finding, installing, and learning a separate desktop app first.

How to fix it locally with NearVid

If the video is simply too long — over LinkedIn's 15-minute cap — NearVid's Trim card handles that first: "Cut a clip without re-encoding — fast, lossless, keeps the original format," a stream copy that takes well under a second for most files and touches nothing about the codec. That's the easy case. For the codec trap itself, "Convert to WebM" is the safer default: NearVid's ffmpeg.wasm engine decodes HEVC natively in software, regardless of what your browser can or can't decode on its own, and WebM (VP8 + Vorbis) is on LinkedIn's own supported-format list by name — so the output lands squarely inside what LinkedIn's troubleshooting page already accepts. Either re-encode runs entirely in the browser tab, on your device, before any of it reaches LinkedIn's servers.

What NearVid doesn't fix

Worth being honest about scope. LinkedIn's aspect-ratio requirement — between 1:2.4 and 2.4:1 — is a crop and framing constraint, not a codec or length problem, and NearVid has no crop or reframe tool; a video shot in an unusual ratio needs a different fix before any of this applies. The 5GB ceiling is rarely the binding constraint for ordinary footage, but if a long, high-bitrate 4K export gets close to it, the small "≈" estimate next to the Quality preset on NearVid's WebM or MP4 export screen shows the expected output size before you sit through a re-encode, the same way it does for email attachment limits elsewhere on this blog. And the minimums — 75KB, 3 seconds desktop, 2 seconds mobile — aren't something a trim or re-encode tool can help with in the other direction; that's a "the clip needs to be longer," not shorter, situation.

The honest summary

None of LinkedIn's numbers are secret, and none of this is a NearVid quirk — 5GB, 15 minutes, and the supported-format list are all published on LinkedIn's own Help Center, and the "uploads but won't process" trap is LinkedIn's own documented behavior for ProRes, with HEVC showing up as the same failure mode in Buffer's separate troubleshooting guide. What actually catches people is that a container extension being "supported" says nothing about whether the codec inside it is. NearVid's Trim handles the length cap losslessly, and Convert to WebM or MP4 turns an HEVC file — or anything else your browser can decode but LinkedIn's pipeline can't process — into a format from LinkedIn's own accepted list, entirely on your device, before it ever reaches an upload button.
