WhatsApp compresses every video to 480p by default (and the document trick that sends the original, up to 2GB)
Everyone who has sent a screen recording or a phone clip over WhatsApp has seen it: the video that looked crisp on your phone arrives on the other end soft, blocky, and noticeably worse. That isn't your imagination and it isn't your camera — it's WhatsApp re-encoding the file on the way out. The fix most people don't know about is that WhatsApp has a second way to send the exact same video that skips compression entirely and accepts files up to 2GB. Here's what each path actually does, the one catch of the full-quality path that almost nobody mentions, and how trimming the clip first — losslessly, on your own device — makes that path practical.
What WhatsApp does to a video sent the normal way
When you attach a video through the photo/video picker, WhatsApp re-encodes it before sending. 9to5Mac's report on the media-quality setting puts numbers on it: standard quality — the default — sends video at 480p, and the HD option raises that to 720p. Two things are worth reading closely there. First, 480p is the default: unless you deliberately tap the HD toggle on a send, or flip the default under Settings > Storage and Data, that's what your 4K phone footage gets squeezed into. Second, even HD is not the original — as the same report notes, there's still compression with the HD option turned on, just less aggressive. The media path never sends your actual file; it sends WhatsApp's smaller re-encode of it.
The document path: the same video, untouched, up to 2GB
WhatsApp's attachment menu has a second option — Document — and it accepts video files, not just PDFs. Files sent this way are not re-encoded at all: as Android Police puts it, WhatsApp doesn't compress documents before sending them, which is exactly why attaching a video as a document has been the long-standing trick for sending it at full quality. And the budget for that path is generous: WhatsApp's own announcement raised the file-sending cap to 2GB at a time — up from 100MB before — with the transfer end-to-end encrypted like everything else, and Wi-Fi recommended for larger files. So the real question isn't whether WhatsApp can carry your original video. It's whether sending the original as-is is actually a good idea — and that's where the two catches come in.
Catch one: the original is big — so trim it first, losslessly
The reason WhatsApp compresses media in the first place is that originals are large — modern phone footage runs to hundreds of megabytes for even a short recording, which is why WhatsApp's own 2GB announcement recommends Wi-Fi for bigger transfers. Sending a whole multi-minute original as a document works, but it's slow to upload, slow for the recipient to download, and usually pointless, because the part anyone actually wants to watch is a fraction of the recording. That's the lever: NearVid's Trim is a lossless stream copy — the video and audio data are copied out untouched, no re-encode, no generation loss, done in well under a second for most files. Cut the three-minute recording down to the twenty seconds that matter and you have a file that is a small fraction of the size at the original, untouched quality — which is exactly the file worth sending through the document path. Trim happens entirely in your browser tab, on your device; the clip never uploads anywhere until you attach it in WhatsApp yourself.
Catch two: a document arrives exactly as-is — codec and all
The media path's re-encode has one genuine upside: what comes out the other end is a format WhatsApp chose for broad playability. A document has no such step — the recipient gets the literal file you sent, so whether it plays depends entirely on their device supporting whatever codec is inside it. If your recipient's device is in either trap, send them a converted copy instead: on Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers, NearVid's feature-detected Convert to MP4 card re-encodes locally to H.264+AAC — the most broadly playable combination — and Convert to WebM works in any supported browser, with the export screen's "≈" size estimate telling you roughly what each quality preset will produce before you encode. A converted copy is no longer byte-identical to the original, but it's one you re-encoded at a quality preset you chose — not a blanket 480p.
What NearVid doesn't do here
Same honesty as always: NearVid doesn't know WhatsApp's rules and doesn't talk to WhatsApp. There is no "make this fit WhatsApp" button, no auto-bitrate targeting, and nothing that toggles the HD setting for you — that lives in WhatsApp's own Settings > Storage and Data, per 9to5Mac's walkthrough. NearVid does exactly three things in this story, all on your device: losslessly trims the clip to the part worth sending, optionally converts it when the recipient's device needs a different codec, and shows you an honest size estimate before any re-encode. Attaching the result as a document in WhatsApp is a step you do, in WhatsApp.
The honest summary
Videos sent through WhatsApp's normal picker are re-encoded — 480p by default, 720p with the HD option, and still compressed even then, per 9to5Mac's report. The document attachment path sends your exact file with no compression, up to 2GB per WhatsApp's own announcement — but it arrives exactly as recorded, size, codec and all.
